On.Plant WMS software for Banfi warehouse management
Thanks to Onit's Warehouse Management System, the famous Banfi winery in Montalcino can now count on efficient and secure warehouse logistics
Banfi, For a better wine world
Banfi was founded in 1978 to create a center of wine excellence in Montalcino and contribute to the development of Brunello by improving local viticulture and winemaking techniques. The innovation brought to the soils and to the Sangiovese, the introduction of advanced winemaking techniques and continuous research have led Banfi to become over time one of the most prestigious wineries in Italy. Today it exports wines all over the world, with particular attention to the American market

Customer need
A new WMS software for modern logistics
The client had an outdated warehouse management system, which did not allow continuous updates or constant evolution of the software. Hence the need to adopt a WMS that reflects all the needs of modern logistics, performing some key functions:
- Identify, check and accept incoming products from suppliers and customers, ensuring traceability.
- Assist operators in the automatic identification of the storage compartment for incoming material.
- Manage planting methods and strategies Manage the map of the rooms inside the warehouse Manage the methods and strategies for picking in the warehouse based on the orders to be processed.
- Manage the supply of production lines.
- Ensure the accuracy of warehouse management activities (inventories, picking, production, checks, etc.) Monitor the progress of daily work Provide warehouse operators with the information necessary to carry out the work.
- Check the efficiency levels and significant parameters of warehouse operations over time, summarized in KPIs (productivity, saturation, etc.)
- Interface with other software and logistics equipment within the warehouse Integrate WMS operating procedures with company management ones
All without sacrificing ease of use and intuitive interface.
The warehouse management software implementation project also had to involve two factories located in different regions: Tuscany (Sant'Angelo Scalo (Montalcino), in the province of Siena) and Piedmont (Strevi, in the province of Alessandria)

On.Plant/WMS: the ideal choice for Banfi
Thanks to cutting-edge features, continuous updates and attractive and intuitive graphics, On.Plant/WMS has proven to be the ideal choice to meet the customer's specific needs. Onit's implementation was guided by an incremental approach, so as to minimize the risks of interruption to daily logistics operations.
The project was started in the Piedmont headquarters of Banfi, which represented a test field to gain familiarity with the system and to refine the integrations with the company management system. At the beginning Onit, in synergy with the customer, focused on shipping flows (outbound). A possible strategy as the pallets of finished product, intended for sale, are labeled with an SSCC label by the ERP system at the end of the production line. The WMS, reading the SSCC, imports the stock, which is then picked up and sold to the end customer. Only in a second phase did the WMS take over the management of the raw material used to create the finished product (inbound).
Subsequently, the focus moved to the Montalcino headquarters, which represents the heart of the customer's production and logistics. Here, the most complex logistics flows required the implementation of advanced software features, necessary to fully satisfy some needs such as, for example, the massive execution of picking lists to optimize shipment completion times.
The project was launched successfully, implementing all warehouse flows simultaneously involving around 30 users, allowing logistics to operate at full capacity and make the most of the new capabilities of the WMS.
Achievements
Efficient warehouse logistics
The system previously adopted by Banfi did not offer advanced functionality for simulation and shipment planning.
On.Plant/WMS introduced specific tools that allowed shipping managers to aggregate and plan shipments to effectively manage customer requests. This has improved the ability to respond proactively to market needs, managing priorities, optimizing times and reducing the risks of error or delay.
The software also provided logistics managers with an advanced tool to monitor the status of shipments in real time. This includes viewing the locations and warehouse areas where the goods are temporarily stored and the number of order lines that have been processed, thus ensuring greater efficiency in preparing for collection by couriers. The integration with the company management system has also made it possible to manage all data relating to sales more efficiently, allowing the automatic generation of crucial documents such as the packing list and the transport document (DDT), eliminating the need for manual intervention and reducing the margin of error.
