Davines: measurable efficiency and more informed decision-making

The client

A global company with Italian roots

Davines S.p.A. was founded in Parma in 1983, born of the vision of Gianni and Silvana Bollati: an Italian company specialising in professional hair and skincare products, now present in over 90 countries with the Davines (haircare) and Comfort Zone (spa skincare) brands.

Over the years, the Davines Group has transformed its headquarters into a veritable production ecosystem: the Davines Group Village in Parma is home to the company’s headquarters, the research laboratory, a botanical garden (Scientific Garden) and the EROC – European Regenerative Organic Centre, established in 2021 in partnership with the Rodale Institute.

Growing without losing control: the logistical challenges of an expanding company

In 2014, alongside the design of the new Davines Group Village, the company embarked on a comprehensive review of its logistics processes. The previous facility, located near the city centre and with a capacity of around 2,500 pallets, was no longer able to support the company’s growth: fragmented spaces, external warehouses and shuttle transport made the system inefficient and difficult to manage.

The new warehouse, integrated directly into the Village, was designed in line with Industry 4.0 principles, with the aim of connecting logistics and production in a seamless and traceable manner. In this context, the need arose to adopt a WMS capable of managing all operations with precision and in real time.

Proposed solution

On.Plant: an integrated platform for managing the entire logistics flow

In 2018, the Davines Group adopted On.Plant/WMS: the platform developed by Onit Operations, which is now fully integrated with the company’s management system.
The solution covers the entire logistics cycle, from the receipt of raw materials to the supply of production lines, with a specific focus on the most critical processes:

  • Reception and quality control. At the goods-in point, an algorithm automatically selects the batches to be sampled according to the criteria defined by the quality department, generating operational tasks. In the event of a negative result, the system automatically blocks all related materials.
  • Storage and return of contract work. On.Plant/WMS manages returns from subcontractors and storage across various types of racking systems: traditional racking, compact racking, gravity racking and vertical storage systems, the latter being used for labels and components intended for production.
  • Supply to production. The system calculates dispatch times for orders, taking into account the quantity required, the location of the material and the estimated time required on the production line. The result is a continuous and balanced flow, which eliminates bottlenecks and ensures production continuity.
  • Component management. The approach varies according to the type of material: standard components are managed via picking bays with weighing; high-precision components, such as colour pigments, are handled using the LAWER machine. The system guides the operator with real-time operational instructions, including alerts regarding the use of PPE.
  • Integration with the MES. At the end of production, On.Plant/WMS automatically creates load units for the finished product, fully synchronised with the production execution system.

Benefits achieved

Measurable efficiency and more informed decision-making

Thanks to the use of On.Plant, the Davines Group benefits from full traceability of its operations, greater reliability and a significant reduction in picking errors.
It is also a scalable solution that can support future growth and strengthen the company’s image as an innovative and sustainable leader.
