Oxygen for Industry and Healthcare
The Sapio Group, founded in 1922 in Monza, is now a benchmark in Italy for the production and distribution of industrial and medical gases, as well as for homecare and integrated home assistance services.
This activity is based on an extensive network of plants and offices, both in Italy and abroad (France, Germany, Spain, Slovenia, Turkey, Portugal, the United States and the United Kingdom).
Specifically, the Group companies involved in this project are Sapio Produzione Ossigeno Idrogeno (Industrial sector) and Sapio Life (Healthcare sector).

Customer requirement
A reliable solution for managing transport
Sapio was already using a software solution to manage both industrial gas distribution and home oxygen therapy cylinder deliveries, but due to difficulties presented by the then solution provider, it became necessary to rely on a company that could guide it towards a new, stable and technologically future-proof solution.
On.Plant solution
Picking up the baton and accompanying Sapio into the future
The On.Plant/TMS solution gave Sapio the stability it needed, making certain aspects of delivery management even more efficient and opening the door to new possibilities for tackling future business challenges.
The transport services organised by Sapio are divided into three business areas:
- Industrial and medical gases in packages
Deliveries of technical and/or medical gases, transported in battery-powered vehicles or pressure vessels, to supply companies in the industrial and hospital sectors - Industrial and medical gases in tanks
Transport in cryogenic tanks of refrigerated liquefied gases (oxygen, nitrogen, argon, CO2) - Home oxygen therapy
Home deliveries of liquid and gaseous oxygen in cryogenic containers and cylinders, directly to patients' homes
For the transport of industrial and medical gases in packages and for home oxygen therapy deliveries, ONIT has provided Sapio with Planning and Cost Control functionalities.
To date, the system is used by a centralised structure that receives orders from customers and plans trips throughout the country.
Distribution starts from a dozen directly managed branches, strategically located, which receive the trip planning developed by TMS, physically prepare the trips and transfer them to the carriers' on-board terminals.
Sapio's fleet includes around 100 vehicles dedicated to cylinder distribution, making around 350 deliveries per day to the industrial sector, and between 350 and 400 vans for home deliveries (around 7,000 per day) of oxygen therapy cylinders.
In addition to the large number of vehicles to organise and daily trips to plan, one of the main challenges concerned the cartography to be used, which was optimised to provide routes suitable for heavy vehicles, with specific constraints also related to the transport of dangerous goods.
On.Plant/TMS made it possible not only to plan the fleet's activities, but also to cost the journeys during the preparation phase and to calculate the final cost of those carried out, with the consequent monthly issuance of pre-invoices to contracted carriers.
The relationship with Sapio grew with the creation of the Document Portal: a platform dedicated to the collection, management and digitisation of documentation relating to the transport companies that collaborate with the Group, their vehicles and drivers. This allows for quick and accurate monitoring of all regulatory deadlines, ensuring that Sapio can be certain that it is using compliant suppliers.
To complete the optimised management of carriers, Onit also offers Sapio a support service in which an operator handles contact and reminders to carriers and drivers.
Finally, the TMS has been further enhanced with the GPS Monitoring feature: real-time integration with on-board terminals to detect the GPS position of vehicles and the routes actually travelled.
Achievements
Transport efficiency delivered to your doorstep
Thanks to the adoption of On.Plant/TMS and the support of Onit Operations, Sapio has achieved numerous benefits.
Among the most significant, we can mention:
- Improvement in operational performance
- Optimisation of the service, with the possibility for Sapio to reallocate the staff previously assigned to relations with transporters to more “core” tasks
- Monitoring and containment of organisational and transport costs
- Faster transport planning
- Transport KPI management
but above all, it has allowed Sapio to rely on a reliable solution that can be moulded to its needs, providing a solid foundation for imagining the future of delivery activities.
